A Precious Stone

God was looking down upon the earth one day and as His eyes were going to and froe something caught His attention. A big ugly piece of coal lay on the ground and it seemed to be calling His name. He was drawn down to it and He began to examine it. He took it in His hands and He began to hold it tight. He began to feel all of the ruff edges on it and He felt the yearning within it to be something besides a lump of coal. He began to chip away at the hard ruff surface and small pieces began to break off and as the pieces were broken away from what was deep inside He could see a small but bright light coming forth. As He chipped off more pieces more light was visible. Before long the only thing that was left was light, a light as bright as a diamond. The coal was gone forever and the jewel inside the piece of coal was a precious stone; a perfect jewel made by the hand of God, and that jewel is you. [Kathleen H. Williams 9-20-10]

When we first come to God we are no more than a big chunk of coal. We are changed inside into a precious jewel but it takes time for us to be rid of all of the hard, ruff covering that is on the outside. As we seek God and surrender all of those things to Him, that should not be made manifest in our lives, we lose more and more of those pieces of coal and the light that is in us will be visible. If we seek God this will happen but if we don’t seek Him we will always be that chunk of coal. The beauty and the light of a diamond is never seen until that which has been its covering is taken away so that it can be revealed.

Ephesians 4:11-13 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.

God sends these men and women to teach and preach His word so that we become that perfect, precious jewel that we were meant to be. There is no abbra cadabra, it is a process just like it takes some hard work to get those diamonds it takes some hard work and a lot of effort on our part. Even diamonds are not very pretty until they have been polished. When people receive Jesus there is an immediate change, I can even see a physical change in people who have been saved.

2 Corinthians 5:17, Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

2Co 5:17 [This is a quote from a commentary by Burkitt]

As if the apostle had said, "If any one amongst you pretend

to be a Christian indeed, engrafted into Christ, by baptism

and regeneration, and is a member of his body; he is by

regeneration made a new man, all the faculties of his soul

are renewed: his principles, affections, and practices, are all

new: Old things are passed, or passing away daily, the

old carnal inclinations of mind are wearing off, the old will is

changed, the old life is reformed; and in a word, whatever

was old and carnal, is now become new and spiritual."

It should be our goal to daily seek God and submit our selves to Him. We need to ask Him to break off another piece of that stuff that is holding the light of Jesus inside so that He will be revealed to the world. If the world sees that light in us then they will believe that the light can be in them too. They are not going to believe if they don’t see Jesus in us. If they don’t see Jesus in us where will they see Him?

Matthew 5:14-16 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

If we are the light of the world then we MUST be a light. Having that hard covering around us is like hiding our light under a bushel where no one can see it. The light in us must be revealed so it will give light to others. When we have light in us, and it shines bright, men will see it. If we have that light then we will have good works and God will be glorified.

Father I ask you today to break another piece of this old coal off of us today that the precious jewel will be revealed and the light of your Son Jesus will shine in us and around us so that others may see the light and come toward that light. Put that yearning in us today to have more light and more of your Spirit in us. Let that yearning in us draw you close to us as we call on your name. Let us be a light to shine in a dark place that you may be glorified. In Jesus name, amen.
